Web Legacy Chat: It's about Elasticity & Roots.

A Web site should be both elastic and grounded.

Web Elasticity: Open to change. Receptive to users. Connected to users. Embrace trends, new applications, new thoughts.

Grounded: History. Set of visitors/followers. SEO basics base. Copy depth and width. Real links. Technical grounds (competent server, etc.).

It's tough to fake being grounded--as it should be. Being grounded takes effort, maintenance and know-how.

It may be easier to embrace elasticity; however, doing it right takes heavy maintenance, testing and awareness.

#1: Web elasticity must be genuine.

Let's say you want to "appear connected" to your audience, so you throw a Twitter app on your site and forget about it. You may know that's a non-elastic move, but surprisingly it's still happening. Some folks (and rooted corporations) still don't get it.

I think one of the greatest things about social media is that you can't try to "appear connected" to your audience any longer.  You either are or you aren't--and that's what is apparent.

What "grounded" Web sites/corporations do you think are doing well with balancing their roots while maintaining true elasticity?

Tired of Social Media Carpetbaggers? Let's Strip Down & Define Social Media

There's a divide in the social media sphere--a deep crevasse brimming with ego, greed, hope, misunderstanding, disregard and, mostly, confusion.

Social media experts are clashing with search engine optimizers and social media divas and gurus are gutting each other with harsh, 140-character lashings--all while eager but mistaken marketers and companies are shooting blanks.

Because social-media needs differ from person to person and from industry to industry, it can be difficult to shape.

But that's the thing--it doesn't necessarily need to be "shaped".

The chaos is part of the concept; however, humans and companies often see the most benefits when they approach social marketing with a plan or loose map.

So who helps give those plan? A "social media expert" (SME), right? Well, that's what everyone's calling themselves now.

But what the heck does that mean?

Let's have a meaningful conversation about what defines a SME .

So--What qualities a SME should possess and what qualifications should it take to "become" a SME?

I'll get the first post going with some of my thoughts.
